Two section Japanese isho dansu, a tansu chest designed for clothing. Crafted almost entirely of kiri (paulownia) wood, prized among Japanese craftsmen. Late Meiji-Period (c.1900). Each section measures approximately 37" wide, 16" deep, and 19" tall; can be used separately or as a single stacked unit. Excellent condition; thoroughly cleaned and waxed with warm golden brown beeswax. Handles and front hardware fashioned from copper alloy, similar to bronze; hardware on sides and back are painted cast-iron. One small missing piece of hardware in lowest right corner (see photos).
